Cleanings, Exams, and X-rays

Dental Exam

Your doctor will complete a comprehensive dental exam at your initial exam visit. At regular check-up exams, the doctor and hygienist will provide the following:

  • Examination of dental radiographs - These are essential for the diagnosis of tooth decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. They also help determine tooth position and root anatomy
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Examination of the face, neck, lips, tongue, gums, and other soft tissues for any signs of oral cancer
  • Gum disease evaluation
  • Evaluation of the gums and surrounding bone for signs of periodontal disease
  • Examination for Tooth decay
  • Along with the radiographs, the doctor will examine all surfaces of the teeth for signs of decay
  • Existing restorations evaluation
  • The doctor will check the integrity of all existing fillings, crowns, and other restorations
Professional Dental Cleaning

A professional dental cleaning (dental prophylaxis) is usually provided by a Registered Dental Hygienist. This appointment typically includes a dental exam by the doctor and the following:

  • Removal of Calculus (tartar): Calculus is mineralized plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. The calculus can form above or below the gum line and must be removed with specialized dental instruments.
  • Removal of Plaque: Plaque is an invisible, sticky film that forms on all teeth. It is composed of bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria in this film produce toxins that cause inflammation of the gums. This inflammation is the beginning of periodontal disease!
Radiographs (X-rays)
  • Only necessary radiographs (X-rays) are taken to assist the doctor in diagnosis of oral pathology (cysts and tumors in the area of the jaw), tooth decay, periodontal disease, and the integrity of existing restorations. Our office uses the latest computer generated digital technology, requiring very little exposure to radiation, ensuring patient safety and proper diagnosis of planned treatment.
